Red Wine: 2020 | Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat | Vosne-Romanee

Elegant and supple, a spicier if not cooler note is both very pretty and quite fresh with its array of dark pinot fruit, violet and exotic tea. The palate is medium-bodied, quite firm in the mouth, a pleasant saline touch but it feels just a little hemmed in on the finish.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Aromas of cassis, dark berries, sweet spices and loamy soil introduce the 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine that's more tightly wound and youthfully primary than its Chambolle-Musigny counterpart. Framed by bright acids and powdery tannins, it reveals terrific potential. Somewhat lower in alcohol than his 2019 portfolio but just as striking and sensual in style, Charles Van Canneyt has produced a brilliant range of wines in the 2020 vintage—including what may well be his best Richebourg (to mention only one cuvée out of several by name) to date. Harvest began on August 28th and only lasted a few days, delivering wines of striking concentration and energy. Everything reviewed here comes warmly recommended and will be well worth seeking out.
      • John Gilman: I love the vibrancy on both the nose and palate of the 2020 Vosne-Romanée from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a blaze of black plums, black raspberries, gamebird, raw cocoa, a lovely base of soil tones, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with lovely transparency and grip, well-measured tannins, lovely acids and fine balance on the long, focused and complex finish. Another lovely villages in the making here.

      Producer Information

Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is a Burgundy producer of high-quality Pinot Noir from prestigious sites in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine was founded in Vougeot by Alain Hudelot in 1962, although the Hudelot family can trace its history in Burgundy back to before the French Revolution. Hudelot married Odile Noëllat in the 1970s, which increased the domaine's holdings – the Noëllat family has its own significant history in Burgundy. In 2008, Alain retired and his grandson, Charles van Canneyt, took over running the estate alongside cellarmaster Vincent Munier. The domaine has roughly 10 hectares (24 acres) of vineyards with plots in four villages (Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges) and in 15 different designated sites. The highest tier of Pinot Noir comes from the grand cru vineyards Richbourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Clos de Vougeot. Hudelot-Noëllatt has a reputation for high vine ages, which it maintains through methodical replanting. The average age is more than 50 years, with several vineyard plantings dating back to 1920, including parcels in Romanée-Saint-Vivant. New oak use in the cellar is regulated to roughly 20 percent for the village wines, going up to 50 percent (and sometimes more) for the grand cru wines. The domaine makes a Bourgogne Aligoté along with its numerous premier cru and villages-level Pinot Noir.
