Producer Information
Honig Vineyard and Winery is a producer located in the Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley known for its Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The estate is a champion of sustainable vineyard practices. Honig's top wines are produced from Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from estate vineyards. The company also produces the same two varieties under a Napa Valley designation. Additionally, there is a late-harvest Sauvignon Blanc. Honig's Sauvignon Blanc is considered to be a benchmark example of the variety coming from Napa, and is distributed to several countries outside the US. The estate uses several sustainable practices, including powering the winery with solar energy, and using sniffer dogs to detect mealybugs, a vineyard pest. Honig also houses bats on the property to eat bugs, reducing the use of pesticides in the vineyard. Louis Honig purchased the 28-hectare (68-acre) property in 1964. The property was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, which Louis sold to neighboring wineries. He wanted to make his own wine after retiring from his job in San Francisco, but unfortunately died before this dream was realized. To honor his memory, his family made a few hundred cases of Sauvignon Blanc in 1981. Cabernet Sauvignon production began in 1989 and production has steadily grown ever since.
