      Detailed Description

An opulent yet tensioned young red with blackberries, violets and black olive skin character. Full-bodied. But has so much energy and focus.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: This top-shelf wine from Mazzei is a blend of 50-50 Merlot and Sangiovese. The Sangiovese goes into tonneaux and the Merlot ages in 70% new barrique for 18 months. The 2021 Siepi (in a heavy glass bottle) opens to sweet fruit nuances of cooked cherry, blackberry preserves, cinnamon and nutmeg. This full-bodied wine is supple and very soft in terms of mouthfeel, and its flavor profile is expansive and all-encompassing. This wine is balanced and seamless, and the 2021 vintage is certainly one of the best editions of Siepi we've seen so far.
      • Vinous: The 2021 Siepi is impressive. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and mocha are nicely dialed up. This plush, succulent Sangiovese/Merlot blend is quite the charmer, as it so often is. The 2021 is exceptionally elegant and polished, certainly one of the best editions in recent memory. All that said, my view is that Siepi would benefit from longer aging in wood and or glass, as it is released too early for a wine of its stature and potential.

      Producer Information

Mazzei is a family wine company which owns Castello di Fonterutoli in Chianti Classico, Belguardo in Maremma and Zisola on the island of Sicily. This estate in Chianti Classico has been owned by the Mazzei family (and company) since 1435. It makes a range of classic regional wines, primarily from Sangiovese. This includes Siepi, a Super Tuscan blend of Merlot and Sangiovese falling under the IGT Toscana designation, and several Chianti Classico wines. The estate lies just north of Siena (and the hamlet of Fonterutoli has views of the city), in the heart of Chianti, covering 650 hectares (1606 acres) of land. There are five vineyards on the estate, all with very different terroirs. The Fonterutoli and Siepi vineyards, together totalling around 40 hectares (100 acres) are the two most important, and provide grapes for the top wines. Generally, the soils in the vineyards are rocky and limestone-rich, and along with the sunny exposition of the vineyards, are perfectly suited to winegrowing. Nine wines are regularly produced under the Castello di Fonterutoli name. The Castello Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG is the pinnacle of the collection and is made from a blend of Sangiovese, Colorino and Malvasia Nera. The grapes are all handpicked and the wine is aged for 20 months in small French oak barriques before it is blended, bottled and released. There are two other top labels. The Vicoregio 36, a self-styled "avantgarde" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, comes from a vineyard of the same name boasting 36 different biotypes of the Sangiovese grape. The vineyard lies in Castelnuovo Berardenga, 30km (18 miles) southeast of Fonterutoli and due east of Siena. Badiòla is also a vineyard-designate wine and comes from a site in Radda in Chianti, 17km (10 miles) by road northeast of Fonterutoli. The three top wines are made with the idea of promoting the three specific site differences of each vineyard and region. Siepi, Concerto di Fonterutoli, Poggio Badiola and Philip (named after 18th Century family ancestor Philip Mazzei) are all Toscana IGT wines. The Fonterutoli and Ser Lapo complete the range as Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva labels respectively.
