Detailed Description

This bottling of Glenlivet 80 Years Old will be part of G&M's Generations series, which has previously presented some of the longest-matured single malt Scotch whiskies ever to be made available to the public and currently includes whiskies from Mortlach Distillery at 70 and 75 Years Old, in addition to a younger Glenlivet at 70 Years Old. This new release comes hot on the heels of The Macallan Red Collection 78 Years Old, which was announced by that distillery in October 2020 and briefly took the mantle of 'world's oldest single malt' from G&M's Generations Mortlach 75 Years Old. These two bottlings are the latest competitors in the Scotch whisky industry's painstakingly slow 'race' to create a 100-year-old whisky. Referred to by renowned whisky writer Charlie MacLean as 'the father of single malt', George Urquhart passionately believed that each whisky should be left to mature until the cask and spirit had combined to create the desired quality, and it was ready to be shared. Independent bottlers and family firm Gordon & Macphail have just made whisky history by releasing the full details of their new release from their Generations range, an 80 year old single cask Glenlivet. The whisky is the oldest single malt Scotch ever bottled, and probably the oldest whisky ever bottled in the world as well. Though the news of the whisky had already broken a few months ago, Gordon & Macphail have also now revealed the design of the decanter and a case dubbed ‘the oak pavillion’ that the liquid will be housed in. Conceived by celebrated architect Sir David Adjaye OBE, the oak used in its creation was sourced from sustainable forests near Gordon & Macphail’s Elgin HQ, and in Dorset in England. The decanter itself was made by Scottish crystal company and whisky stalwarts Glencairn Crystal. The whisky itself is sourced from a single sherry cask using spirit first distilled on February 3rd 1940. The cask, sourced from sherry producers Williams & Humbert, was originally first used for the export of Jose Ramirez sherry from Puerto de Santa Maria. Only 250 70 cl decanters have been created. Though the price has not been released, it’s certainly not going to be cheap. Gordon & Macphail instead ask for interested parties to register interest to receive more information about how to get ahold of a bottle.

Gordon and MacPhail Worlds Oldest Single Malt Collection Scotch Whisky | 700ML Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is very meaty. Barbecued steak and oak come through first, but it certainly does open up. Many layers of sweetness emerge, including flat coca cola, sugared black tea as well as fruit like mangoes On the herbal side there’s aloe vera and green tea. Pipe tobacco and black pepper accompany the experience throughout.

Palate: To taste, the meat theme sticks around. It’s extremely beefy to start before it quickly opens up and keeps going. The pipe tobacco still manages to hang on, joined by papayas and cherries served on dark chocolate mousse. There’s also a smorgasbord of spices, both sweet (cloves, cinnamon) and herbal (sage, thyme).

Finish: The finish nicely combines oak and mint.
