      Producer Information

Château Bellegrave is a certified organic wine estate in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux. It makes a single red wine from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The property has 8.5 hectares of vines with a 75:25 split in favor of Merlot. Soils are stony gravel, clay and sand; subsoils are iron-rich crasse de fer. The vineyard began to covert to organic practices from 2001, making it something of a trailblazer within Pomerol. It achieved Ecocert certification in 2009. Harvests are carried out manually, plot by plot and row by row, with the order dicated by ripening. Hi tech sorting tables remove leaf matter, stems and seeds. The crushed grapes ferment in temperature-controlled vats. Maturation takes place in vats made from fine-grained Allier oak from Trocais forest. The wine is bottled after 20 months. There is no second wine, though the Bouldy family make two other organic red wines wines from other properties. Château des Jacobins (90 percent Merlot, 10 percent Cabernet Franc) is a separate Pomerol vineyard, while Château Matignon (70:30) is a Saint-Émilion sourced from a 1.3-hectare vineyard in the west of that neighboring appellation. Both are hand-harvested, and spend 20 to 22 months ageing in barrel. Jean Bouldy and his wife Andrée bought Château Bellegrave in 1951. Their son Jean-Marie took over in 1980, being joined by his wife Pascale in 1995. Their children Aurélie and Jean-Baptiste joined in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Buyers should note that there are several Château Bellegrave properties across Bordeaux, including one in Pauillac in the Médoc. A handful more are called Belgrave. Please ensure your merchant has the wine for which you are searching.
