      Detailed Description

An exceptional vintage with the earliest harvesting period of the century. The mellow tannin is further softened by the richness in alcohol and feeble acidity. The fruit is brilliant, intense and delicate. Very deep colour. Bouquet with complex aromas of charred wood, spices, coffee and ripe fruits. Admirable in the mouth because of the melting tannin and velvety texture. A fleshy, compact structure which unveils itself fully.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Spectator: Complex aromas of tobacco, earth and forest leaves follow through to a medium body, with fine tannins and a fruity and soft finish. Very soft and long. At its peak, but pretty and seamless.
      • James Suckling: A wonderful depth of fruit with very firm and dense tannins. It has so much character of olives, spices, and berries. It's the wine’s freshness and intensity that won me over the 1990 Cos.

      Producer Information

Chateau Cos d'Estournel is a Grand Cru vineyard located in St. Estephe. Its oriental facade is adorned with three pagoda turrets, all cast in a soft golden sandstone. Chateau Cos d'Estournel today covers 170 acres separated from Chateau Lafite, along the southern edge, by the stream between St. Estephe and Pauillac. The gravelly soil, over a flint, limestone and silicate subsoil low in nitrogen, has eroded over centuries to form steep ridges which perfectly drain the vineyards. The vineyards are planted 60 percent in Cabernet Sauvignon vines, 2 percent of Cabernet Franc, and 38 percent in Merlot. Naturally, the percentage of Cabernet or Merlot in the composition of each vintage depends on the climate which favors one grape variety or the other.
