The palate has beautifully resolved oak, with a touch of chocolate and dark, roasted coffee aromas, but the freshness again is hallmark stuff, with that sour cherry and lemon acidity adding length and freshening the finish.

      Detailed Description

The palate has beautifully resolved oak, with a touch of chocolate and dark, roasted coffee aromas, but the freshness again is hallmark stuff, with that sour cherry and lemon acidity adding length and freshening the finish.

        Producer Information

Fèlsina is a leading wine estate in Chianti Classico, founded in 1966. It is situated at the southeast edge of the Classico appellation. It was once one of many estates owned by the Dukes of Tuscany, and was farmed mainly by sharecroppers growing olives until World War II. The estate produces a wide range of wines, including multiple Chianti Classicos (including Riservas and Gran Selezione), IGT Toscana wines, Vin Santo and sparkling wines. That being said, the estate is best known for its supple, aromatic Super Tuscan wine Fontallaro, and the spicy, intense Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva, both made from Tuscany's most important variety, Sangiovese. Grapes for Fontallaro are sourced from vineyards straddling the Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi appellations, and the wine receives around up to 22 months in French oak, some of which is new. 95 of the estate's 600 hectares (235 of 1480 acres) are planted to vines, generally on rocky, chalky soil with layers of mineral-rich marine sediments. The vineyard has been extended and replanted largely using massal selection – taking cuttings from numerous top-performing plants rather than planting clones of a single vine.
