The great millennial Belair continues to impress. It has a wonderful nose that takes time to undress. blackberry, dark plum, raspberry, graphite and a touch of cigar smoke. The palate evokes the richness and the opulence of the vintage with a superb citric thread of acidity, finishing with structure and focus.

      Producer Information

Château Bel Air is a Bordeaux wine estate in the Saint-Emilion satellite region of Lussac-Saint-Émilion appellation. It makes several red blends, with Merlot being the most significant variety. The property covers 30 hectares (74 acres) with 21 hectares (52 acres) under vine. The grand vin is predominantly Merlot, roughly 70 percent, with the rest being divided similarly between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Half of the fruit harvested is fermented in stainless steel and half in cement vats. The wine is then aged for 18 months with 30 percent of the blend in new oak, 20 percent in used barrels, and 50 percent in cement vats. A small-production prestige wine was added to the catalog in 1998 called the Cuvée Jean Gabriel. It is entirely made from Merlot, and sees equal amounts of new and used oak, and only 500 cases are made annually.
