Red Wine: 2001 | Château Palmer | Margaux
The 2001 vintage has reached its zenith, revealing dusty red and black cherry notes that persist gently. However, what truly stands out are the secondary elements of spice, tea leaves, and hints of saddle leather, which add depth to the wine.

Detailed Description
The 2001 vintage has reached its zenith, revealing dusty red and black cherry notes that persist gently. However, what truly stands out are the secondary elements of spice, tea leaves, and hints of saddle leather, which add depth to the wine. The oak has seamlessly integrated, imparting a smooth quality, and the finish is graced by sweet, well-rounded tannins.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Medium-garnet colour. The nose is still very youthful with notes of ripe cassis, dark cherries, cloves, graphite, a touch of cedar and a little mint. The medium bodied, well structured palate gives medium-firm tannins, medium+ acidity with a good balance of plump, spicy fruit. The oak needs a little more time to marry and tannins are a little on the firm side but otherwise approachable now. Long finish.
- Decanter: As the 1983 surprised many people for its success compared to 1982, so too is the 2001 Palmer, outgunning the 2000 on many of my recent tastings. I would not bet on it lasting as long as the 2000, but this is still young right now, with firm, still-muscular tannins and deep cassis fruits. An enjoyably balanced and subtle wine filled with charcoal and woodsmoke.
Producer Information
Château Palmer is a wine estate located in the Margaux appellation of the Médoc. It was ranked as a third growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, although for many decades it has been consistently rated as one of the best wines in the region. Unusually for the Médoc, Château Palmer usually has as much Merlot as Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (along with a small amount of Petit Verdot), which helps give the wine a fleshy and generous structure. It can be drunk young, but will also reward long cellaring. Château Palmer was once part of the d'Issan estate, and takes its name from Major General Charles Palmer of the British Army, who bought the land in 1814. He developed it considerably and gained a strong following for the wine in England.
