Shows a slightly lifted, peppery character on the nose, but also plenty of toasty oak and bold fruit. Loads of blackberries, blueberries and chocolate cascade over the palate, accented with enough spice and warmth to leave a fleeting impression of fruitcake.

      Producer Information

Glaetzer Wines is a critically well-regarded wine producer based in Tanunda, in the Barossa Valley region of South Australia. It was founded in 1995 by Colin Glaetzer, and is now run by his son Ben, and best known for its red wines based largely on Shiraz, which display ripe, supple fruit, soft tannins, and a combination of ageability and approachability. The range of wines is headed by Amon-Ra, Glaetzer's flagship Shiraz. Renowned US wine critic Robert Parker gave the 2003 vintage a score of 96-100, which helped establish it as one of the most sought-after and expensive Australian wines. The Anaperenna wine (formerly labeled Goldolphin), a Shiraz – Cabernet blend, is made in the same way as Amon-Ra in small open-topped fermenters, aged for 16 months in new (predominantly French) oak 300-litre hogsheads and is then bottled without filtration. Also included in the Glaetzer range are Bishop, a Shiraz, and Wallace, a Shiraz – Grenache blend. All the fruit comes from the Ebenezer sub-district, sourced from a small group of contract growers with well-established, low-yielding vineyards with vines up to 110 years old. Ben Glaetzer also makes and co-owns the Heartland brand and is a partner in and winemaker for Mitolo Wines in the McLaren Vale.
