Producer Information
Château Belle-Brise is a small but well-regarded wine estate based in the Pomerol appellation in northeastern Bordeaux. It is located just north of the town of Liborne, on the northern banks of the Dordogne river. The two-hectare (five acre) estate is planted to roughly 80 percent Merlot and 20 percent Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is run organically and biodynamically. The vineyard is one of the most southwesterly in the Pomerol appellation – indeed, it is situated in Bonalgue, a northern suburb of Libourne. The small vineyard is bordered to the south by housing and to the west by the high-speed railway line between Bordeaux and Paris. Although its location is not generally considered among the top-flight of Pomerol terroir, the estate reportedly sits on an excellent soil profile, even boasting Pomerol's signature "crasse de fer" (iron-rich sandy, gravel-clay). Given its size, Belle-Brise's production is unsurprisingly small and the estate's 800-case annual output is mostly sold direct to restaurants worldwide. Furthermore, the current owner of the estate – the originally Armagnac-based Henri-Bruno de Coincy, who bought the property in 1991 – actively avoids having high-profile critics and publications rate the wines. This combination of rarity and relative anonymity has garnered the label an almost cult-like following.
