      Detailed Description

Burlotto 's Barolo Monvigliero 2016 is a fine Piedmontese wine. It is one of the 4 Barolos in the Burlotto range, produced in the Verduno area, the northernmost area of the Barolo appellation. The production technique adopted by Fabio Alessandria, which blends modernity and tradition, gives life to pure and extraordinary wines. This Barolo Monvigliero 2016 has an intense garnet red color in the glass, while the nose is hypnotic and surprisingly intense, with aromas of crushed black olives, citron, truffle. The sip is of great structure and at the same time very elegant, almost ethereal.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Made with whole-cluster fermentation, the Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2016 Barolo Monvigliero opens to distinctive intensity with floral notes backed by forest berry and bramble. Including the grape stems in fermentation imparts a slightly herbaceous character with eucalyptus and balsam herb. I also pick up on some freshly milled white pepper that reminds me of the Nebbiolo-adjacent Pelaverga grape that is also commonly planted in Verduno. The wine opens slowly to reveal grilled herbs, toasted chia seed and pistachio nut. More than obvious fruit, the core of the wine offers wild rose, lavender and pressed flowers.
        • Vinous: The 2016 Barolo Monvigliero is utterly spellbinding in its profoundness. In this vintage, the Monvigliero moves into shades of more blue-toned fruit. Whole clusters, always 100%, are remarkably integrated. Rose petal, lavender, mint, crushed flowers, wild red berries, blueberry, blood orange and mint are some of the many notes that grace this exceptional, silky Barolo. The 2016 was fermented with low temperatures and spent two months on the skins. With its laser-like focus and incredible cut, tension and nuance, the Monvigliero will be slow to reveal itself, but wow - what a wine.

The Giovanni Battista Burlotto estate, located northwest of the Barolo vineyard, in Verduno, is a traditional family business in Piedmont. Founded in 1850 by Ignazio Burlotto, the estate then passed into the hands of his nephew, Giovanni Battista Burlotto, who for almost 77 years worked to ensure the quality and reputation of his wines. From the end of the 19th century, the estate acquired a solid international reputation. Giovanni Battista Burlotto died in 1927 and, after a few years of slumber, Fabio Alessandria, great-grandson of the founder, raised the estate to its highest level. The vineyard covers 12 hectares, half of which is planted with Nebbiolo, the other varieties grown are Barbera, Dolcetto, Pelaverga, Sauvignon and Freisa. In the vineyards, the work is classic and well done, the rows are grassed and little plowed, the replacement of plants is carried out in mass selection. In the winery, too, the work is traditional, with destemming, treading, fermentation with native yeasts in old, open, tapered wooden tuns; the macerations are long (up to two months); the wines are neither filtered nor fined. One of the reference areas of the region, a safe bet.
