        Producer Information

Szepsy is a leading producer of Tokaji wine, based in the village of Mád, just northwest of Tokaj town in northeast Hungary. The Szepsy family has been producing wine in the region since the 1500s and current head of the estate, István Szepsy, is regarded as a leading figure in Hungarian winemaking. The estate boasts some 52 hectares (128.5 acres) of vines split across 22 vineyards in six municipalities. Production is centred in Mád, roughly eight kilometers (five miles) from the Bodrog river, along whose northern banks much of Tokaji's vineyards can be found. Soils are mainly volcanic and rich in zeolite, quartz and clay. The average age of the vines exceeds 40 years. In the cellar native yeasts are used, enzyme additions are avoided, and sulphur additions kept to a minimum. Each year, the estate makes an average of 38,000 bottlles of dry wine, 7,000 bottles of sweet aszú, and 12,000 of off-dry szamorodni. Among their multiple vineyard holdings, Szepsy has identified over 300 clonal variants of Furmint – the principal Tokaj grape variety. Szepsy himself is a recognised authority on the grape and, more broadly, considered a major figure in the Hungarian wine industry. As well as experience in France and a stint at running the state-controlled wine production facility in Mád (when Hungary was in the Soviet-influenced Eastern Bloc), he was one of the driving forces behind the estsablishment of the esteemed Royal Tokaji Wine Company (also in Mád). In 2013, he received the French Les Seigneurs du Vin accolade and has won numerous awards for his winemaking. Son István Szepsy Junior is head winemaker at Szent Tamás winery, also in Mád. Ancestor Szepsy Lasko Mati, in 1631, is regarded as the first to produce wine in the aszú style as we know it today. In the present, István Szepsy is regarded as one of the regions most eminent winemakers.
