      Detailed Description

Dark ruby red colour with a tawny rim. Intense nose with some balsamic notes, mint, dried herbs, jammed cherry and plum aromas with some new oak. The palate is dense and bold, still youthful with some roasted oak presence, yet with fine layers of spicy dark fruit, rounded tannin and intense lingering flavours leading to a long and spicy finish.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The Tenuta Sant'Antonio 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Campo dei Gigli (packaged in a very heavy eco-unfriendly glass bottle) is a dark and brooding wine packed tight with richly concentrated black fruit delivered in thick and lasting layers. The bouquet peels back to reveal dark plum and baked blackberry, but there is also a major focus on spice, tar, barbecue smoke and teriyaki. The wine makes a wide and large impact on the palate. It shows enormous textural richness and softly integrated tannins. You can age this blend of 70% Corvina and Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, 5% Croatina and 5% Oseleta (that sees three years in barrel) over the long haul.
      • James Suckling: Very potent aromas of blackcurrants and toasted oak with hints of eucalyptus and black-cherry liqueur, following through to a full palate with firm tannins that drive the fruit on through the long finish. There’s a kind of raw, almost rough-and-ready character to this that’s a bit hard work now. Will even out with bottle age.

                      Producer Information

Tenuta Sant'Antonio is a winery located in the Monti Garbi area of Verona, near Lake Garda. The winery is owned by four brothers: Armando, Paolo, Tiziano, and Massimo Castagnedi, and produces Soave, Valpolicella and Amarone wines. The estate is made up of 50 hectares (124 acres) of vineyards – 30 hectares (74 acres) around Mezzane and 20 hectares (50 acres) in San Zeno di Colognola ai Colli in the Valpolicella district. Grape varieties grown in these vineyards include classic regional varieties Corvina, Molinara, Rondinella, Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave, and more international varieties like Chardonnay. Both the red and white wines are aged in contact with their lees, and are mixed in stainless steel wine jars and later via the tradtional bâtonnage method in barrel. They are then filtered just a few days before bottling. Tenuta Sant'Antonio's flagship wine is an Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva named Lilium Est. The wine is made by the appassimento process where after harvest, the grapes are dried for several weeks on bamboo racks or straw mats, to concentrate sugars for increased body and intensity of flavor. Sant'Antonio makes a range of other wines under various other DOC and IGT titles, including the value Scaia range and the sulphite-free Telos range.
