Notes of blackberries, currants, Mediterranean scrub, spice and vanilla carrying through on the palate, with smooth tannins and good length on the finish.

• James Suckling: Another juicy and chewy sagrantino with blackberry, chocolate and walnut character. Full and layered with tannins.

• Vinous: A deep and darkly alluring mix of dried violets, lavender and black currants wafts up from the 2017 Montefalco Sagrantino. Its velvety textures flow across a core of vibrant acidity, as mocha-tinged red and black fruits give way to a staining of fine tannins and salty minerals. A bitter crunch lingers through the long and structured finale, wrapping the perimeters of the palate in youthful poise, as hints of dark chocolate slowly fade. I’m finding a lot to like about the 2017 Sagrantino, but its tannins come across as a bit underripe in this vintage. Some cellaring should help soften the blow.
