The nose is gorgeous with red fruits (blackberries, redcurrants), figs, black pepper and spices. The mouth is round and lush with a lot of flesh and intensity, backed by a great graphite spine. It displays aromas of blue fruits, porcini mushrooms, black truffles and mourvedre meaty components.

• Wine Spectator: This has an exotic bent at first, as it offers up a lovely gush of crushed plum, boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavors, laced seamlessly with sweet black licorice. Then this gains in depth and grip as it moves through the finish, showing accents of apple wood, leather and Turkish coffee and ending dark and winey in feel. Built for the cellar.
• Vinous: Saturated ruby. Expansive, smoke- and mineral-accented black raspberry, cherry liqueur, cassis, exotic spice and licorice aromas show outstanding delineation and lift. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering impressively concentrated black and blue fruit, floral pastille, spicecake and succulent herb flavors that utterly stain the palate. Shows outstanding energy and breadth on a wonderfully long, floral- and spice-dominated finish shaped by steadily building tannins.

Château de Beaucastel is a magical place, surrounded by hills planted with vines, hundred-year-old olive trees and truffle oaks. Here nature is blooming, liberated and at ease. Ancient vines with knotted roots are nurtured in the traditional "gobelet" style in the soil typical of the region, laden with large round pebbles (galets). When the Mistral blows - the legendary wind from the Alps - it whistles down the Rhône Valley cooling the vines and revealing aromas of Garrigue. It has the Southern accent of those who live here at one with the Mediterranean climate. It's on these ancestral soils, supporting the 13 grape varieties of Châteauneuf du Pape, that each new vintage of Beaucastel is born.
