Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is the king of the cellar, unfurling in the glass with a less outgoing bouquet of peony, cherries, cassis, currant leaf and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and structured, with a rich chassis of fine-grained tannins, juicy acids and a long, mineral finish.
- Allen Meadows: "A background hint of wood easily allows the cool and equally pure essence of red currant, plum and violet scents to be appreciated. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the tautly muscular flavors that are also shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the balanced and lingering finale.
Producer Information
Domaine Bertheau is a Burgundy wine producer based in the Côte de Nuits village (and appellation) of Chambolle-Musigny. The domaine is best known for its impressive vineyard holdings, including plots in the Bonnes Mares Grand Cru vineyard and in some of the area's more prominent premier cru vineyards, including Les Amoureuses and Les Charmes. Altogether, Bertheau produces around 1250 cases annually from these holdings, under the grand cru, premier cru and village appellations. The vines in the top vineyards are on average 45 years old and are planted mainly on classic, clay-limestone soils. Owner and winemaker François Bertheau (the domaine is sometimes referred to as Domaine François Bertheau) takes a hands-off approach to winemaking. He uses very little new wood, racks only when necessary, and leaves his wines in barrel to develop slowly over 18 months.
