Its deep gold colour is defined by a fine and magnificent effervescence. These pearls create a white cordon on the surface. The powerful bouquet reveals aromas of black cherries, blood orange, Chinese aniseed and menthol. Shortly after, a more complex character is appearing with notes of pastry, cooked butter and passion fruit with discreet floral aromas. A remarkable attack develops on your palate with the right balance of freshness and richness.

• Vinous: The 2017 Brut Grand Cellier d' Or is a rich, exuberant wine. In 2017, the Brut Grand Cellier d' Or has an exotic, tropical quality that is a bit unusual, but also incredibly appealing. Hints of mango, passionfruit, citrus confit and white flowers all build nicely in the glass. Medium in body and yet quite resonant, the 2017 is an absolute delight. The 2017 looks to be more of an early-drinking vintage, but I doubt that will be a problem for Vilmart fans.

• Wine Spectator: Reveals a rapierlike spine of acidity that defines flavors of dried cherry, walnut oil, preserved lemon and pain d'épices, which have greater impact up front and through the midpalate, echoing quietly yet persistently on the finish.

Champagne Vilmart is a Champagne house situated in the small village of Rilly la Montagne in the heart of the Montagne de Reims. It was founded in 1890 by Desiré Vilmart and has passed down the family since. Vilmart produces wines from 11 hectares (27 acres) of vineyards in and around the village, with about 60-percent planted to Chardonnay and 40-percent to Pinot Noir. It is a so-called "grower" Champagne house, which means it only makes wines from vineyard plots that it owns, rather than buying in grapes, which is common for the larger houses. Vilmart's standard cuvée is Chardonnay-dominant, with Pinot Noir contributing around 30-percent. On top of this, the house produces a range of other wines, including the flagship Grand Cellier d'Or vintage wine, also Chardonnay-dominant, made from the oldest plots of vines. The base wine is aged for 10 months in 228-liter oak barrels before the secondary fermentation. There are numerous other wines including the Rubis rosé.
