Bright garnet with an intensely aromatic nose full of dark plum, morello cherry and wild thyme. The tannins are velvet-smooth and melt in the mouth. Full-bodied with an elegant core of minerality and a long finish.

• Wine Advocate: The 2018 Tinto Quinta de Ervamoira is a field blend aged for 18 months in one-third new French oak (about one-third overall in large vats). It comes in at 15% alcohol (actual). This is a single-quinta red, of course, only sourced from the best parcels. (There will eventually be a single-parcel wine too, but maybe not from this quinta.) Smooth and refined, this shows off its mid-palate finesse. In its youth, however, it also shows off that new wood a bit too much. That will get better in time. The tannins are very ripe, so you can drink this now, but you'd be well advised to give this a couple of years anyway to let it be all it can be. It's pretty delicious even now, though, and hard to resist. Yet two days later, it was still super and still improving. To my shock, it had hardly budged an inch. It didn't and doesn't seem to have the structure for that, but so far, so good.

• Wine Enthusiast: Garnet colour. Very expressive, with enormous aromatic complexity. In the mouth it is super elegant, with a silky beginning, good volume and an intense and persistent aftertaste.

Ramos Pinto is a Port House founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880. The house's aged Tawnies were historically the stars of the portfolio (and arguably still are), the rest of the lineup has caught up over the last few decades. The estate is made up of four different quintas. The flagship wine comes from the Quinta do Bom Retiro vineyard in the Pinhão parish of Cima Corgo. Pinto purchased this 62 hectare (153 acre) quinta in 1919, and 40-percent of the vineyard is still planted in the traditional way, with grape varieties mixed throughout the vineyards. The Urtiga vineyard, covering just 4ha (10 acres) is located next door. The other major estate is Ervamoira, at Touça in the Douro Superior. Pinto bought this vineyard in 1974 and broke new ground by planting in vertical rows up the slopes, and planting by variety based on the vineyard's soil types, rather than in the traditional mix. Nearby is Quinta dos Bon Areas, which was added to the portfolio in 1985. The vines here provide fresher, less-concentrated grapes than the other sites, which are typically used in blending. The Ramos Pinto portfolio covers most of the typical Port styles, including white, tawny and ruby variants as well as several aged tawnies and LBVs. The house also makes some top vintage Ports, and red and white Douro table wines. The company became part of the Roederer group in 1990.
