      Detailed Description

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2018 Ölberg Riesling GG offers a pure, fresh and slightly stony yet also fruity bouquet of a fully ripe Riesling. Charmingly round and fruity on the palate, this is a full-bodied, silky-textured, elegant and refined dry Riesling with character and a lingering ripe-fruit expression and stimulating grip that adds freshness but not unripeness.
        • Wine Spectator: Lots of coagulated milk and intensely spicy clove character here, making this a unique wine from the outset. The acidity is very punchy, driving through stoney nuances and keeping all the citrus and green fruit taut and precise. Medium-bodied and medium-long.

        Producer Information

Kai Schätzel belongs to the league of the most interesting winegrowers in Rheinhessen. Schätzel's wines are full of character and have their own clear style. In the legendary Nierstein, he vinifies grandiose wines in the old wooden barrel cellar, which are never loud, but always convince with their inner tension. From Gutswein to Grosses Gewächs, these usually only have between 11% and 12% vol. Alcohol. And yet Schätzel manages to give the wines enough depth. This is due to the flawless and complex work in the vineyard as well as the necessary care in the cellar. The vines are in the best locations and work is done according to biodynamic guidelines. They are then spontaneously fermented in the 800-year-old vaulted cellar and matured in large wooden barrels and sometimes in small steel tanks. Site wines generally mature on the yeast until May and are carefully bottled directly with only light filtering. The portfolio includes Nierstein's finest crus such as Ölberg, Pettenthal and Hipping. The Niersteiner Rote Hang is Schätzel's home, so to speak, and you can clearly taste this origin.
