Red Wine: 2018 | To Kalon Vineyard Co. | Eliza's

The 2018 Eliza's Red Wine is more blue-fruited, with pretty floral nuances, medium to full-bodied richness, silky, ultra-fine tannins, and incredible balance. It brings plenty of richness and depth, but it's the purity, complexity, and finesse that really drive the cuvée.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2018 Eliza's Red Wine is a roughly 50-50 blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, named after the widow of John Yount. It's slightly floral and herbal, in a good, complex and savory way, with those elements nicely accenting its cherry and cassis fruit. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, silky and smooth, more elegant and complex than the Highest Beauty, with terrific length on the finish. Best After 2023.
      • James Suckling: A new red from half cabernet franc and half cabernet sauvignon, with crushed berries, flowers and hints of lead pencil, stones and coffee beans. Full-bodied with layers of soft, creamy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Juicy and savory. Bigger wine. Drinkable now, but better in 2025.

      Producer Information

To inspire his vision for Highest Beauty, map in hand, Andy Erickson tasted his way through 56 individually fermented blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon from our To Kalon Vineyard. To connect flavor and texture with soil and sun, he then walked the blocks, fine tuning his selections. Along with being a winemaker, Andy is also a highly experienced, hands-on winery designer. Leaving no detail to chance, he helped build the fermenters used to craft this small-lot wine. Deep in the heart of Napa Valley, H.W. Crabb planted a vast empire of vines in the 1860s. Eventually it grew thick with grapes, orange trees, and Italian chestnuts. So rich was it with life and bounty that Crabb nobly bestowed upon the wine produced from the vineyard the Greek name To Kalon, or Highest Beauty. Today, To Kalon Vineyard Company is dedicated to crafting unique expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon from this storied place. Sited between the sheltering Vaca and Mayacamas mountain ranges in Napa Valley, To Kalon Vineyard’s well-drained, gravelly soil allows the vines to root deeply finding precious moisture and nutrients. The broad diurnal temperature shifts and reliable sun, wind, and fog, provide and ideal blend of growth and rest for complex flavor development.
