        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: This estate's proprietor, Jean-Antoine Nony, is a passionate wine lover with a fine palate, so when he asked me to revisit the 2019 Grand Mayne, I was happy to oblige his request. Offering up notions of sweet black fruits and blueberry preserve framed by a generous application of creamy, spicy new oak, the wine is full-bodied, rich and textural, with a lavish core of ripe fruit, impressively lively acids and a long, vanillin-laden finish where powdery tannins assert themselves much more gently than was the case six months ago. While it is indeed somewhat less extracted than I had perceived, it remains somewhat jammy and creamy, and even if it's a well-made effort in this style, I can't help but think that the site could deliver more.
        • James Suckling: This has a perfumed, pretty nose of dried violets, cloves, blackberries, chocolate cherries and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied with firm, fine and powdery tannins. Mouth-coating and expansive, with sweet spice to close.

        Producer Information

Château Grand Mayne is a Grand Cru Classé wine estate located in the center of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The grand vin of the same name is based on Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Today, the vineyard covers 17 hectares (43 acres) of a 21-ha (52-acre) estate. A section of the vineyard borders Château Beau-Séjour Bécot. 78 percent of plantings are Merlot, 19 percent to Cabernet Franc, with 3 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The amount of Cabernet Franc has increased in recent years; the estate is aiming for a figure of around 35 percent. The vines are planted on slopes that face south and west, on clay and limestone soils. Harvest is carried out by hand and the grapes from each plot are vinified separately in stainless steel tanks and wooden vats. The grand vin is then aged in French oak barrels for approximately 18 months before bottling, with 70 to 80 percent new wood. Château Grand Mayne makes approximately 6,000 cases of its Saint-Émilion Grand Cru classé wine per year. The second wine is Filia de Grand Mayne, previously known as Les Plantes du Mayne.
History: The Laveau family were the proprietors of the estate from 1685 until 1893. At its peak the estate was over ten times larger, comprising 250 hectares (620 acres) of land and over 60ha of vines. It changed hands several times, shrinking as a result of several of those transactions. Current owners the Nony family took control in 1934. Grand Mayne is named for the manor, or mayne, which was built on the property in the late 16th and early 17th century.
