Ultra-spicy red and black berry aromas combine with those of jasmine tea, violet, star anise and discreet oak. The succulent, rich and delicious flavors possess excellent volume and mid-palate density while exhibiting a subtle minerality on the firm, serious and built-to-age finale that also flashes a touch of warmth.

• Wine Advocate: The 2019 Échezeaux Grand Cru Les Rouges du Bas is very promising indeed, wafting from the glass with notes of rose petals, plums, red berries, raw cocoa and exotic spices. Full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, it's lively and fragrant, with rich and refined tannins, good acidity and a long, expansive finish. Jean-Nicolas Méo began picking on September 13, observing that "everything was ripe at once this year," and that alcohol levels—for the most part, around 14%—were a little higher than he would have wished for. Yet the wines in the glass are hard to fault: Méo excelled in 2018, and his 2019s are even more structurally refined and vibrant. As I've written before, Méo's wines see quite a long élevage, and they can often be a little structural and introverted in the fall following the vintage, but these 2019s, just like the 2018s at the same stage last year, were remarkably open for inspection. Displaying superb concentration and mid-palate amplitude without any particular perception of heaviness, I found much to admire; and, in summation, this is a very fine portfolio that, when taken as a set, appears to match or surpass what was achieved here in 2018.

• Decanter: Labelled with the lieu-dit Rouges du Bas, paradoxically located fairly high on the slope, the parcel is 0.44ha and was planted in 1950. Méo acquired the property in 1987 and today it delivers a wine of profound concentration, with dark plummy fruit and notes of smoke, spice and a firm minerality. The wine can be a bit imposing, but there is also great elegance and finesse here.

Domaine Méo-Camuzet is a wine producer located in Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits. It produces some of the most celebrated wines from the Côte d'Or from a range of grand cru vineyards, including Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, Corton and Echézeaux. Most of Méo-Camuzet's wines are made from Pinot Noir, and are known for their delicate aromatic concentration. The founder of the estate was Etienne Camuzet, an early-20th Century politician based in Paris, who offered parts of his estate to a variety of sharecroppers to farm. Eventually, it came into the hands of Jean-Nicholas Méo in 1986, who realized that the extensive sharecropping meant that only a small portion of vines were under the domaine's control. He set out a long-term strategy to regain the plots from the sharecroppers who were currently working them, with the goal of eventually having estate-grown fruit and bottling under his own label, Méo-Camuzet. One of these landholders was iconic Burgundy producer Henri Jayer. He had farmed the domaine's land to bottle under his own label for about 40 years. He retired in 1988 and helped to advise Jean-Nicholas on the reacquisition of his vines. Méo-Camuzet now has 14 hectares (35 acres) of vines, including a part of the Cros Parantoux Premier Cru site, which was made famous by Jayer.
