Detailed Description
Detailed Description
The wonderful exposure enjoyed by the Vosne Romanée premier cru "En Orveaux" vineyards endows these wines with a deep ruby color and aromas of red fruits, blackcurrants and raspberries. Their robust and richly perfumed bouquet imbues them with a character at once silky and rustic. Their freshness and mellowness, combined with a certain sensuous vinosity renders them a worthy rival to other Vosne Romanée premier crus. This is a supremely well-balanced wine.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2019 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux is a great success, opening in the glass with aromas of cherries, plums and orange rind, complemented by hints of spices, smoke and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids and powdery tannins, it's elegant and nuanced. Mongeard notes that the vines in this parcel are planted north-south, which isn't a disadvantage in warm, sunny years like this.
- Burghound: Here too there is enough wood to notice on the wonderfully spicy nose of dark currant, plum, violet and jasmine tea. There is better freshness and verve to the delicious and attractively detailed flavors that exude evident minerality on the youthfully austere, focused and lingering finale. This is at once classy and refined while being built to repay mid to even longer-term cellaring.
Producer Information
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is a Burgundy estate with a long history of making fine Pinot Noir wines in Vosne-RomanĂ©e. The Mongeard family dates its origins in the commune back to 1620. In the 1920s, the marriage of EugĂšne Mongeard to EdmĂ©e Mugneret brought together vineyards from both families, increasing the size of the domaine. In 1945, their son Jean began estate-bottling the wine for the first time and releasing it commercially under the name Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret. Jean had taken over the estate and at 16 was selling its grapes to esteemed producers such as Marquis d'Angerville and Henri Gouges. It was on Gouges' advice that Jean transitioned to bottling the wine himself. The estate is now one of the larger properties and has 30 hectares (75 acres) of vines in over 30 different vineyards, with an average vine age of more than 40 years. The most sought-after wines in Mongeard-Mugneret's catalog are six grand cru-designated wines made from parcels in four esteemed vineyards: Ăchezeaux, Grands Ăchezeaux, Clos de Vougeot and Richebourg. Pinot Noir is the most significant variety in the portfolio, supplemented with a small number of white wines made from Chardonnay and AligotĂ©. The white wines tend not to come from the more prestigious grand and premier cru-designated vineyards that the domaine is famous for.
