Detailed Description
Seriously Old Dirt 2019 displays a brilliant, deep garnet-red colour. This wine delivers layers of fresh fruit on the nose; plum, black cherry, and blackberry along with warm notes of baking spice and vanilla pod. Subtle licorice and seductive tobacco and hazelnut add a luxurious dimension. Flavors of ripe black cherry develop into lovely mineral notes, along with a lingering finish.
Reviews:
- Wine Spectator: Features fine, chalky tannins that provide good tension and definition to flavors of black and red currant, bay leaf, olive, anise and hints of minerally salt and smoke. This medium- to full-bodied version is fresh and focused, classy and harmonious overall.
- James Suckling: Aromas of redcurrants and dark earth follow through to a full body with plenty of dark-cherry and berry flavors and a long, flavorful finish. Creamy and round tannins, yet tight and focused. Bark and berry aftertaste.
Producer Information
Vilafonté is a South African wine producer, located in the Stellenbosch wine region on the bench of the Simonsberg mountain range. It produces a portfolio of wines source entirely from the estate property. The flagship range is a duo of Bordeaux blends; Series C and Series M. The former a Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc dominant blend whilst the latter is Malbec and Merlot dominant. Both are blended for longevity and barrel-aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels. Seriously Old Dirt is the company's second label, named after the ancient soils of which the estate is planted on. It is thought to be one of the oldest documented soil types, with relics of stone age cutting tools discovered on the estate thought to be between 1.4 and 1.9 million years old. These nutrient deficient soil types stress the vines to reduce yields and produce concentrated flavor compounds in the grapes. The 42 hectare (103 acre) estate has a cooling maritime mesoclimate thanks to the proximity to both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Here, wet, cold winters and long dry summers create ideal terroir for viticulture. The company was co-founded in 1997 by local Mike Ratcliffe and Californian natives Zelma Long and Phil Freese.
