Delicately oaked, using older barrels as well as some concrete eggs, this is blessed with some noted fruit intensity and has an engaging texture, that offers richness but is countered by a thread of acidity giving this wine beautiful balance and length. The best part of it is that as well as it’s showing at the moment this has got at least another 4-5 years of great drinking in front of it.

• Vinous: A blend of Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Verdelho and Viognier, the 2020 Field Blend has one of Stark Condé’s finest aromatics, offering honeysuckle, passion fruit, lychee and waxy aromas, hints of linseed and walnut emerging with time. The palate is very well balanced with an intense opening of pineapple, stem ginger, lemon thyme and grapefruit. Quite concentrated in style, and packed with flavor on the finish. Give it a year in bottle. Very fine.

• Decanter: Flavours of grapefruit sherbet, white blossom and lemon zest. The palate is taut with a mineral finish and grapefruit-pith notes.

Producer Information

Stark-Condé is a South African wine producer created in 1998 by Cuban-American José Stark. Today, the winery produces around 6000 cases of wine a year, and is known for producing some of the best red wines in South Africa. After working as a graphic designer, Stark moved to South Africa in 1997 with his wife Marie and settled on her family's estate in the Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch. Stark experimented with a few barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon on the property, which was then known as Oude Nektar. It was met with high acclaim from critics and the company was established soon after. Oude Nektar is still produced by the company to this day. Stark-Condé has about 40 hectares (100 acres) in the Jonkershoek Valley, which is considered to be a prime region for red varieties. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes at 150 to 600 meters (500-2000ft) above sea level, providing excellent drainage which helps to curb the vines' vigor. This redirects energy into berry ripening to produce concentrated examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Three Pines is Stark-Condé's flagship lineup, and is named for the three pine trees on the top of the hill that overlook the winery. There are also Stellenbosch-designated wines; a Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more recently a white field blend of Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, and Verdelho are produced.
