Producer Information
Virna Borgogno is a wine producer based in the village of Barolo in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont. The estate is particularly known for its Barolo wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The portfolio includes other renowned Piedmontese wines including Dolcetto d'Alba, a pair of Barbera d'Alba reds and a Nebbiolo d'Alba. There is also a Langhe Nebbiolo and a Langhe Rosso blend of various varieties. Reds are the emphasis here, though Virna Borgogno also produces the Ba Rosè cuvée and a pair of Langhe Bianco wines. Solouno is Arneis-based while StoFuori is made from Timorasso. Virna Borgogno began her oenological studies in Alba and became the first woman to study and graduate in winemaking from Turin University. In 1988 she began to work in the cellar of the family wine estate with her father Lodovico. The operation took Virna's name in 2001. Today, she runs the estate with her sister Ivana and is head winemaker. The vineyards extend over a total of 12 hectares (30 acres). They include plots in some of the most historic vineyards in Barolo, like Cannubi Boschis, Preda, Sarmassa, I Merli, San Giovanni and Costa delle Rose.
