Guyana's rum industry was founded in 1752 when a group of English merchants set up the first sugarcane plantation on the north coast of the country. In 1804, Guyana became a British colony and production of sugar, rum and other distilled spirits continued. Today, the industry is a significant part of the country's economy. Guyana's oldest distillery is the Demerara Distillers Limited, which opened in 1776. It was originally named the Demerara Distillers Company Limited, but changed its name to Demerara Distillers Limited in 1959. The Nectar of the Daily Drams 25 Year Old Rum is made from the Demerara Distillers Limited. It is an un-aged rum which is distilled from molasses, fermented and distilled three times. The rum has a natural alcohol content of 50% and has been aged for 25 years in bourbon barrels. The result is a rich, smooth and creamy rum with a hint of vanilla and oak.
