Detailed Description

A tasty tipple from the Jules Gautret Cognac House, Pineau des Charentes is made by blending grape juice with Cognac in oak barrels. It is said that this method was first discovered by mistake in the 16th Century, when a French winegrower added grape must to a barrel of Cognac by accident! A happy accident indeed, this is a delightful sweet wine, with plenty of juicy fruit and Cognac richness. Ideal for summer evening sipping!

Jules Gautret Pineau des Charentes Rouge Tasting Notes

Nose: Subtle nose of ripe fruit, black cherries and currants.

Palate: Rich, vinous red grapes, juices, and skins, bumped up by warming, poached fruit, and oaken Cognac.

Finish: This powerful and tight-fitting pineau is fresh and fruity with a long aromatic aftertaste.

Distillery Information

Our history began back in the 19th century when two brothers, Jacques and Étienne Gautret, purchased Château de Jonzac in 1818. After being left fairly inactive for a while, in 1847 the Château became the spirits trading company “Gautret & Fils” founded by Jacques and Françoise Gautret’s son: Louis François Jules Gautret. Their son would subsequently choose to market his products under the brand name “Château de Jonzac”, where he set up his promising company. The Gautret trading company later officially took on the name “Jules Gautret” following the transfer of the company from the father, Jacques Gautret, to his son Jules Gautret. Back when business schools had barely begun to appear, he studied, as was customary at the time, in a trading company, while taking drawing and painting classes at the Bordeaux School of Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts). Hence, his taste for creating. Two centuries later, the Jules Gautret team’s drive has never stopped growing with each passing generation. Enhanced thanks to all those who have worked, and are still working, with this outstanding raw material, the company has been forging a new identity over the years. And now, the Jules Gautret team – made up of young, promising minds – is breathing new life and innovation into the age-old brand.
