Stitzel Reserve 31 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Waxy orchard fruit, pear brandy, cedar, apple skin, burnt sugar, and dried orange peel with hints of cola syrup, antique leather, and old library books.

Palate: Incredibly dense and evolving with dark caramel, candied citrus, mature oak, maple syrup, tobacco leaf, black tea, baking spice, and rich dried fruit layered beneath waves of concentrated sweetness and spice.

Finish: Exceptionally long and powerful with lingering oak tannins, burnt sugar, leather, orange oils, warming spice, and an almost endless echo of mature bourbon depth.

Distillery Information

Stitzel-Weller Distillery originally opened on Derby Day in 1935 and has long occupied a near-mythical place in American whiskey history. The Louisville distillery became synonymous with legendary brands such as Old Fitzgerald and the original Van Winkle bottlings before ceasing production in 1992. The Stitzel Reserve collection was established to showcase extraordinarily rare barrels that remained under the care of the historic site, with selections overseen by Nicole Austin, Diageo's Director of American Whiskey Liquid Development and Capabilities. The 31 Year release represents the second expression in the series and the oldest Stitzel Reserve bottling to date, yielding only 176 bottles from 13 surviving barrels. Released exclusively through the distillery at a suggested retail price of $3,000, it stands as one of the rarest and most ambitious bourbon releases of the modern era, demonstrating that, under exceptional circumstances, Kentucky bourbon can achieve profound elegance even after thirty-one years of maturation.
