Producer Information
Champagne Tarlant is a family-owned and run house in Oeuilly in the Marne. It is particularly associated with Brut Nature or Zero dosage wines, which account for the vast majority of output. Its history dates back as far as 1687, and it was one of the first ten independent grower houses formed after the establishment of the Champagne AOC in 1927. Benoît Tarlant and his sister Melanie - the twelth generation - are currently at the helm. Wines are made principally from the Champagne blend triumvirate of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. The less common Arban(n)e, Pinot Blanc and Petit Meslier are also grown. There are 14 hectares (34.5 acres) of estate vines, across the crus of Oeuilly, Boursault, St-Agnan and Celles-les-Condés. In all there are 55 distinct parcels. Soils vary between chalk, clay-limestone, limestone, sand and small pebbles. Vineyards are grassed to combat erosion. Vine density is around 9000 plants per hectare, and the average age of vines is around 40 years. Pest management majors on pheromone traps and the encouragement of benedifical predatory mites called typhlodromes. Green manure or organic fertilizers are used, depending on soil requirements in each plot.
