      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: This dark ruby/purple-tinged sleeper of the vintage offers a sweet bouquet of black currants, underbrush, licorice and berry fruit. Medium to full-bodied with excellent depth, good acidity and an endearing roundness.
      • Wine Enthusiast: Owned by the Cazes family of Lynch-Bages, therefore with impeccable winemaking behind it, this is a big, tough wine based on great ripe fruit.

        Producer Information

Château Ormes de Pez is an estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux's northwestern Haut-Médoc region. The estate was formerly classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel and, when the classification was formally dropped in 2011, became a part of the marketing group Les Exceptionnels with five other former Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel properties. Château Ormes de Pez lies within the small hamlet area of Pez (a separate estate, Château de Pez, lies over the road), just west of Sait-Estèphe village. Prior to the French Revolution, the property was part of the Domaine de Pez estate in Saint-Estèphe, it's situation being later defined by the elm trees ("ormes" in French) once growing on the property. The vineyards enjoy a mild maritime climate thanks to the influence of both the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. There are 35 hectares (87 acres) of vineyards – Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 54 percent and is mainly planted on gravelly soils, while Merlot makes up 37 percent on sandy clay soils. The rest is planted to Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is then aged in French oak, around half of which is new. After a succession of ownerships following the French Revolution, Château Ormes de Pez was the first to be bought by the Cazes family in 1940. It is now part of Société Jean-Michel Cazes along with Château Lynch-Bages and Cordeillan-Bages.
