• Wine Advocate: The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques is flat-out beautiful. There is plenty of 2010 richness in the glass, yet the wine also has elements of finesse and gracefulness to balance some of its more overt qualities. Dark red cherries, menthol, mint, cinnamon and licorice are woven together beautifully in this delineated, finely sculpted wine. There is a centeredness and poise to the Clos Saint-Jacques that is compelling. The integration of the 100% new oak barrels is masterful. Esmonin used 100% whole clusters here.

• Allen Meadows: An elegant, pure and airy nose features an ultra-pure and intensely floral character on the earthy and ripe dark berry fruit aromas. The layered and utterly delicious middle weight flavors possess an excellent sense of underlying tension as well as an almost pungent minerality on the full-bodied but well-delineated finish. This beautifully well-balanced effort is pretty much textbook Clos St. Jacques.

Producer Information

Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is a wine producer based in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits subegion, producing a range of wines from vineyards sites in both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The majority of the wines produced by the estate are Pinot Noir-based, but it does also have a single white wine within its portfolio made from Chardonnay grapes. The Esmonin family originally came from nobility and has lived in the Burgundy region since the reign of the Dukes of Burgundy (which ended in the 15th Century). The estate was previously known as Domaine Michel Esmonin et Fille, named after the father of the current proprietor, Sylvie Esmonin. Domaine Sylvie Esmonin has five hectares (12 acres) of vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, of which 1.6 hectares (3.9 acres) are located within Gevrey-Chambertin's most renowned Premier Cru climat: Clos Saint-Jacques. Esmonin's section of this vineyard lies at its northern end – directly out of the back of the winery. The estate has also recently acquired vineyard plots in the appellations of Volnay Santenots (just under 0.2 hectares/0.5 acres) and Côte de Nuits-Villages, with additional sites situated in Bourgogne Rouge, Bourgogne Aligote and Bourgogne Blanc.
