        Producer Information

Weingut Leitz (formerly Josef Leitz) is a leading estate located in Rüdesheim am Rhein in the Rheingau region of western Germany. It is particularly known for its Riesling wines whic are made in a variety of styles. The Leitz family has winemaking links running back to the 18th Century. The estate has had a turbulent recent history, however. The winery was destroyed by a bombing raid in the Second World War and was then rebuilt by Josef Leitz. Leitz's son Antonius died at a young age, leaving his wife to run not just the family wine estate, but a flower shop and the household. When award-winning owner-winemaker Johannes Leitz (Antonius' son) took the reins of the estate in 1985, the Leitz holding spanned around 2.6 hectares (6.5 acres) of vineyard. In the 1990s, Leitz moved to native yeast ferments, slow fermentations and extended lees aging. Quality improved, acclaim followed, and strong export markets were developed. The estate has since grown to 43 hectares (106 acres) of vineyard, with much of that growth occurring in the early 2000s. Nearly 80 percent of the vines lie on south-facing slopes in Rüdesheim. The largest single holding covers almost 13 hectares (32 acres) of the Erste Lage (premier cru) Drachenstein site, close to the Niederwald forest overlooking Rüdesheim on the right bank of the Rhine river. The estate has further parcels in Magdalenenkreuz, Bischofsberg, Kirchenpfad and six other vineyards. As with other local producers, the portfolio leans towards drier styles as the growing conditions of Rüdesheim tend to deliver healthy grapes suitable for such wines. The local slate soils are credited with producing the prized minerality notes in the final wines.
