This has aromas recalling mature dark-skinned fruit, baking spice, flint and menthol. The bold, velvety palate doles out baked plum, raspberry jam, vanilla and nutmeg framed in densely woven, fine-grained tannins before closing on an almost tangy mineral note.

        Producer Information

Travaglini Gattinara is a wine producer situated in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. The estate devotes the majority of its winemaking attention to the production of Nebbiolo-based wines sourced from 44 hectares (109 acres) of cultivated vineyards in Gattinara. The estate was founded in 1920 by Clemente Travaglini and in 1958 the management of the estate was passed to his son, Arturo Travaglini. Today, Cinzia Travaglini holds full control of the winery's operations and works alongside her husband Massimo Collauto, the chief winemaker. Travaglini is best known for its collection of DOCG-classified Gattinara wines: Gattinara, Tre Vigne Gattinara and Gattinara Riserva. The Nebbiolo grapes (known here as Spanna) for these wines are sourced from vineyards occupying rocky, iron-rich soils on sunny southwest exposures. The riserva is only made in the best vintages and is typically aged for three years in oak casks, followed by aging in bottle for approximately 8 months. The Travaglini wine range is supplemented by a small vineyard plot planted to two lesser-known northern Italian grape varieties – Vespolina and Uva Rara. Small quantities of these red wine grapes are blended together with estate-grown Nebbiolo grapes to create the Cinzia wine label, named for the estate's current proprietor. The iconic bottle was originally created in 1958 by Giancarlo Travaglini. The unique shape allows the wine to be served without the need for decanting as all sediment is captured in the bottle when poured directly to glass. The dark-colored glass was also designed to protect the quality of the wine from the damaging effects of excess light exposure.
