Size: 750ml

ABV: 12%

Varietal: Chardonnay

    Country/Region: United Kingdom, Kent

      Detailed Description

Super swanky English sparkling wine alert. This comes from Chapel Down's top vineyard near Maidstone in Kent, which is considered by none other than top TV wine expert Oz Clarke to be possibly England's greatest vineyard. This is made from 100% chardonnay, fermented with wild yeasts in oak barrels. Couer de cuvee means, roughly, heart of the blend, so only the very best wines go into this. It makes a great alternative to a prestige cuvee champagne.

      Producer Information

Chapel Down is a wine producer based in Tenterden, Kent in the southeast of England. It is particularly well known for its range of sparkling wines made from the classic Champagne blend, as well as Pinot Blanc and Bacchus. It also makes a range of still wines, beers, ciders and spirits including Gin and Vodka. The company owns over 40 hectares (100 acres) of vineyards across Kent, and also sources fruit from another 50 hectares (130 acres) of grower vineyards from Hampshire to Essex. In addition, another 73 hectares (181 acres) have been leased for future planting. These vineyards are primarily located on the Norht and South Downs of Kent, which have roughly the same chalky geological layer as Champagne, some 400km (250 miles) southeast of the winery. This, and the cool climate, give Kent a similar terroir to the famous French region, and help create the crisp acidity needed for quality sparkling wine production. Chapel Down's principal grape varieties are Bacchus (which gives similar flavors to Sauvignon Blanc but ripens more easily in the UK), Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with smaller amounts of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Meunier, as well as some lesser known German varieties. The estate makes a range of sparkling wines, led by the Vintage Reserve Brut.
