        Producer Information

Pyramid Valley Vineyards is a renowned New Zealand wine producer with vineyards in North Canterbury and Central Otago, and also working with fruit from Marlborough. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the main focus, though wines are also made from Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The estate was founded in 2000 by California-born Mike Weersing (1965-2020) and his German-born, American-raised wife Claudia Elze. The first wines were produced in 2002. Winemaker Mike had studied viticulture and oenology in Burgundy and worked in wineries and vineyards all over Europe. Claudia established a biodynamic approach in the vineyards, making it one of the first in New Zealand. Mike Weersing was also a pioneer in the country of a number of winemaking techniques. These included extended skin contact for whites, no additives other than minimal sulfur at bottling, and the use of neutral clay amphorae (with sparing use of oak). In 2017 New Zealand winemaker Steve Smith MW and Brian Sheth bought Pyramid Valley. They also own the Smith & Sheth label. There are just 2.2 hectares (5.5 acres) of vineyards at Pyramid Valley's Waikari Estate, a tiny portion of the 80-ha (200-acre) farm that comprises the estate. The clay limestone soils and cool, dry climate in Canterbury are well-suited to the Burgundy varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which are planted in the vineyard.
