Detailed Description
Detailed Description
The aroma is a Shiraz dream, with wonderous aromas of rich fruit, earth, spice and oak. The palate is smooth, rich and powerful with great flavour and length.
Reviews:
- James Suckling: Layered, supple fruit and a lovely mouthfeel—ripe, but not flabby—really shine in this wine. Rich blackberry and plum flavors, impressive integration of fruit and oak mark the finely balanced palate. Closes long with very smooth tannins, dark chocolate and coffee flavors. It's less structured but more seductive than the 1994.
Producer Information
Geoff Merrill Wines is a South Australian wine producer based in the Adelaide suburbs, with vineyards in McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. It is best known for Shiraz from the former plus Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from the latter. The range also includes Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot and Southern Rhône-style blends partnering Syrah with Grenache and Mourvedre. Varietal Sangiovese and Riesling wines also feature. Merrill began his career in wine at the age of 17 in 1964 when he started a four-year traineeship at Seppelts in the Barossa. After a spell in Stellenbosch, South Africa, he joined Chateau Reynella in McLaren Vale in late 1975, becoming Senior Winemaker two years later and holding the position until 1985. He then worked as Consultant Winemaker for the property's owner, Thomas Hardy & Sons. Merrill is strongly associated with an heroic, luxuriant moustache, occasionally reaching full Merv Hughes handlebar proportions. In recent years this seems to have sadly succumbed to beard sprawl.
