      Detailed Description

This elegant, exotic, lush, medium-bodied, Burgundian-styled St.-Emilion boasts great complexity along with an enticing perfume of blueberries, blackberries, and flowers. Although it does not possess a great deal of weight, it offers pure fruit, sweet tannin, and no hard edges. This is a textbook example of Bordeaux at its richest and most elegant.

        Producer Information

Château Quinault L'Enclos is a well-regarded Saint-Émilion wine estate making red wine based on Merlot. It is located well within the city of Libourne, next to the Dordogne river in the northwest corner of the Saint-Émilion zone, and is surrounded by urbanization. Strictly speaking, the property is named Château Quinault, and gives its name to the surrounding neighborhood. As a wine estate it is usually known to retailers and consumers by the full name above, as it appears on labels of the grand vin. As conveyed by the name (Enclos literally translates to enclosure) there is one single vineyard parcel. This is unusual for an estate of this size on the Bordeaux Right Bank. The second wine is labelled Lafleur de Quinault. L'Absolut de Quinault was a further cuvée which was discontinued by the current owners (see below). The vines have been farmed organically since 2009; full certification was achieved three years later. Many of the vines are over 45 years of age, with the oldest dating back to 1934, and the second oldest replanted after the frosts of 1956. The vineyard is planted with around 72 percent Merlot, and 14 percent each of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Under the current owners the merlot percentage has dropped around ten percent, mostly in favor of Cabernet Sauvignon. Previously there was some Malbec but this has been removed. This change is rather unusual on the Right Bank as a whole. However the soils here are a mix of rocks, sand, gravel and only a small amount of clay (as preferred by Merlot). Those areas of pebbles and gravel are suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Furthermore the vineyard's location means that it has a warmer macroclimate than many Saint-Émilion properties. The harvest has historically taken place before most other vineyards in the appellation zone. Since 2008 the fruit has been picked even earlier to avoid overt jamminess in the wine.
