        Reviews:

        • Vinous: Very ripe aromas of dark fruits, cinders, spices and earth, along with strong torrefaction notes of coffee and mocha; there's something here that's dulling the fruit. More pristine in the mouth than on the nose, but showing obvious evolution to its flavors of black fruits, iron and brown spices. Plenty of thickness here but lacks the peppery clarity of the 2001. Finishes with robust, rather dusty tannins. This is considerably less impressive and more evolved than a brilliant bottle I tried last winter for my 1999 horizontal, perhaps owing to a touch of brett, which has compromised the wine's inner-mouth tension and minerality.
        • Burghound: I was quite surprised to find just how open for business this was in magnum format as I expected something far more reserved but such was not the case. A beautiful and highly expressive nose of ripe black cherry, earth and the hallmark red pinot fruit is followed by medium weight yet concentrated flavors of bacon, smoke and sappy pinot extract that are given lift and verve by the intense minerality and outstanding length. This has added a good deal of weight and seems more powerful than before yet it remains very stylish and classy with excellent potential though like the same wine in 750 ml (see herein), this is so well balanced and harmonious that it could easily be drunk now with pleasure. That said, unless you are lucky enough to have this in quantity, I would counsel cellaring it for another 5 to 10 years. In a word, terrific.

        Producer Information

Domaine des Lambrays is a producer located in Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. The domaine is best known for its Pinot Noir wines from the Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru vineyard, over which it has a near monopole. The wines are highly acclaimed by critics, regularly scoring highly in several publications. In addition to the flagship Grand Cru wine, Lambray also produces Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Loups. This is made from the younger vines on the Clos des Lambrays vineyard, combined with fruit from the Clos Sorbet vineyard located at by the domaine house and cellar. The wolf (loup in French) is the emblematic animal of Morey-Saint-Denis, appearing on the village crest as well as the domaine's. The third red is a village-level Morey-Saint-Denis wine mostly sourced from vines lying just above and to the north of Clos des Lambrays. A Bourgogne Rosé is also bottled. Domaine des Lambrays also makes a pair of Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Chardonnay white wines. Since 1993 it has owned a 1.55-hectare (3.8-acre) parcel of Clos du Cailleret and a 1.2ha (3-acre) holding in Les Folatières. In 2012 a single cuvée of white wine - Les Louves was made. Finally, the domaine has also made Fine des Lambrays, a grape Brandy. This is matured for seven years in oak after distillation. Consumers should note that sometimes these non-Grand Cru bottlings are described by retailers as "Clos des Lambrays".
