      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Always a formidable wine, the 2014 Carignano del Sulcis Superiore Terre Brune shows its pride and pedigree despite the difficulties you might associate with this vintage (especially with mainland wines, but less so with island wines). This wine represents a historic blend of 95% Carignano del Sulcis and 5% Bovaleddu grapes for good measure. Bovaleddu is another name for Bovale, and the variety comes in two clones: one with large berries and one with tight, smaller berries. This wine immediately paints a Sardinian landscape for you, with aromas that recall the native myrtle (mirto) plants that grow freely on the island and softer tones of scorched island earth and even a veiling of sea salt that reminds you of its littoral Mediterranean identity. The wine spends 20 long months in new oak.
      • James Suckling: Enveloping, elderberry and damson nose that has no hint of exaggeration of any kind. With aeration, some meaty character develops. Great concentration and a super tannin structure that gives this a plush feel through the long, slightly warm finish.

      Producer Information

Cantina Santadi (also known as Cantina di Santadi) is a wine producer based in the southwestern corner of Sardinia, some 60km (40 miles) west of Cagliari, the main town of the Italian island. The estate was founded in 1960 as a cooperative of grape growers coordinated by the Land Reform Board of Sardinia (ETFAS). Since then, it has championed local grape varieties – the red grape variety Carignano, and white grape varieties including Vermentino, Nuragus and Nasco. The majority of wines produced by Cantina Santadi are regionally (DOC or PDO) certified, including the standard wines and the superior Carignano del Sulcis wines. Other labels in the range hold the more broad IGT and PGI statuses. The estate also produces a Grappa from Carignano pomace and a fortified wine from a blend of red grape varieties. All of the wines are matured in vats or stainless steel tanks before bottling. The higher-quality Excellence label red wines are also matured in French oak barriques and are aged further in the bottle for several months before release. The estate consists of several vineyards spread over an area of approximately 3000 hectares (7413 acres) in the lower Sulcis region. This coastal area boasts a variety of landscapes and soil compositions typically of sand, clay and limestone.
