2015 | Olga Raffault | Chinon Les Picasses

Les Picasses is the most famous Chinon lieu-dit, close to the village of Beaumont-En-Véron on the north bank of the Vienne River. It is a slope with full southern exposure and chalky clay-limestone soils, the combination resulting in fully ripened, structured wines. Raffault's mid-slope vines are at least 50 years old and are worked organically and harvested by hand. The fruit is destemmed and the whole, uncrushed berries are fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tank; fermentation and maceration last for 25-30 days, depending on the vintage. The wine is aged for 2-3 years in oak and chestnut foudres ranging from 30-50 hectoliters; it is then further aged in tank and bottle before release about four years after the vintage. Les Picasses is the fullest-bodied, most structured and most complex of the Raffault reds.

• Vinous: From Raffault’s top site, with 50 year old vines on chalky clay-limestone soils. Aged for one year in foudre. Light ruby in color. Bright, fruity nose of cherry and raspberry. Light and precise in the mouth, nimble, soft and supple, delivering more warm red fruit and a lengthy finish.

Domaine Olga Raffault is a French wine estate situated in the central Loire. The majority of its portfolio is dedicated to the Cabernet Franc-based red wines from the village of Chinon.The 24 hectare (60 acre) estate consists of 23ha (57 acres) of vineyards devoted to the cultivation of Cabernet Franc for the domaine's Chinon Rouge and rosé varietal wines, with the remaining hectarage planted to Chenin Blanc for its single Chinon Blanc wine.The vines are 30 years old on average and sit on three unique soil types that produce three distinct Chinon Rouge wines: Les Barnabés (sand-gravel), Les Peuilles (silt-clay) and Les Picasses (clay-limestone). Domaine Olga Raffault's fourth Chinon Rouge wine, La Singulière, is a select blend of Cabernet Franc grapes grown on the oldest of the domaine's clay-limestone vineyard plots.
