Detailed Description
Detailed Description
Impressive, ripe red-cherry and berry aromas here with appealing, brambly complexity. The palate delivers an approachable, juicy and smoothly arranged bed of ripe and vibrant tannins.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2016 Monbrison is a Margaux that has performed splendidly this vintage, one that did not shine as benevolently as other appellations. It has a vigorous, delineated bouquet with blueberry, raspberry and crushed violets, the new oak neatly integrated. The palate is nicely structured and though there is a touch of hardness to the tannin on the entry, that will soften by the time of bottling. The acidity is well judged and there is good grip on the finish. Monbrison is often well-priced en primeur and as such, this comes recommended.
- Vinous: The 2016 Monbrison shows similarly to other Margaux wines, albeit with a touch of leanness on the rather serious nose of pencil-lead-infused black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with tannin that has loosened up since its showing in barrel, and endowed with a fine bead of acidity and gentle grip. The Pauillac-like, graphite infused finish needs to develop more detail.
Producer Information
Château Monbrison is a Bordeaux wine producer located in Margaux, known for its Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant grand vin. The first vineyards at the estate were planted in the 17th Century when the land was still part of the neighboring Médoc estate, Château d'Arsac. In 1749 the estate became independent, trading hands from the influential Ségur family to the Copmartin family. Today the estate is owned by descendants of the Davis family who have continued to manage and modernize the château since 1921. The estate spans 15.5 hectares (38 acres) of vineyard land, 9ha (22 acres) of which are located in Margaux with the remaining land situated in the Haut-Médoc. In Margaux, the estate's vines were most recently replanted in 1963 to 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Merlot, 15 percent Cabernet Franc and five percent Petit Verdot. The soils at Château Monbrison are composed of deep Pyrenean gravel and the site's climate is relatively humid with mild winters and temperate summers. Château Monbrison's grand vin is vinified plot by plot, primarily in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The components of the Left Bank Bordeaux blend are aged separately in barrel, then are tasted, blended, and aged for a further 18 months in French oak barrels with racking every three months. The amount of new oak used for the maturation process depends on the vintage. The wine is not filtered. The château produces a second wine, Bouquet de Monbrison, from the same 13ha (32 acre) Margaux plot. This Bordeaux blend typically ages in a mix of new, one- and two-year-old barrels and is bottled unfiltered. From the château's Haut-Médoc vineyards, the estate produces Haut-Médoc de Monbrison – a Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot blend produced from 20-year-old vines planted in the appellations of Listrac and Moulis. From 2020, a Cabernet Sauvignon rosé from the château's Haut-Médoc vineyards has been included in the portfolio.
