      Detailed Description

The 2016 Vintage Port, bottled in May 2018, is a blend of 62% Touriga Nacional, 21% Touriga Franca and small portions of Sousão and Alicante Bouschet. It comes in with 106 grams of residual sugar. Fairly intense and even tighter than Graham's, this might be somewhat approachable in a few years, but it really needs to open up. It will require more time than the wines like Warre's and Smith Woodhouse in the Symington stable. Beautifully wrought, this looks like an impressive Cockburn's, more balanced and fresher than the stolid and jammy 2015 yet still with fine concentration to go with the freshness.

        • Wine Spectator: This shows fantastic graphite and dark-berry character with black-stone undertones and hints of dried roses. Full-bodied and very tight and precise. Good kick in the end. Love the polished tannins, which are totally folded into the wine. Reminds me of the 1947 Cockburn.

        Producer Information

Cockburn's Port is a historic Port house, that has production dating back to 1815. Scotsman Robert Cockburn established the house on his return to Portugal after previously fighting in the Napoleonic Wars under Wellington. The company became a major Port brand throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries. The company's base is the Quinta dos Canais in the Upper Douro, which has 97 hectares (240 acres) of vineyards on rocky schist soils. The quinta takes its name from the system of stone channels built in the 19th Century which are used as a water source to irrigate the vines. The flagship offering from the portfolio is the Special Reserve, first released in 1969. Sourced from vineyards in the Upper Douro, the Special Reserve is matured in oak casks for five years prior to bottling. All other styles of port are produced, from Ruby through to Vintage, including Tawnies and White Port. The modern offering from Cockburn is the Portonic, a blend of white port and tonic water availible on the market in a ready-to-drink can.
