Cristia's 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is a rich, ripe, slightly warm offering that's a solid representative of the appellation. Cherry fruit picks up pepper and anise notes on the supple finish.

• Jeb Dunnuck: The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (85% Grenache and 15% Syrah) comes all from the Cristia lieu-dit (all sandy soils) and was destemmed and brought up mostly in concrete. I always find this cuvée forward and ready to go, yet the 2016 is tighter and more backward, with medium to full body, good acidity, and traditional notes of blackberries, plums, peppery spice, and garrigue..

• James Suckling: Quite ripe and alluring, with a lush wave of raspberry and plum pâte de fruit flavors rolling through, inlaid with light anise, cinnamon and black tea notes. A subtle shiso leaf echo underscores the finish and finely beaded acidity carries it all deftly. Very long.

Producer Information

Created by Etienne Grangeon 70 years ago, the property originally comprised 2 hectares of Grenache. It was developed further by the driving force of his son Alain, who joined the domaine in 1963. Passionate about viticulture, he notably contributed to the expansion of the domaine and planted improved grape varieties such as Syrah and Mourvèdre and created the identity of Cristia, based on the knowledge and respect of his soils.
Then, in 1999, Baptiste, Dominique and more recently Florent joined their father. Their priorities were to concentrate on selecting the best parcels in order to produce a wine of a great quality with a good ageing potential.
