Sarl Les Vins de Vienne was founded in 1996 by three vinters, Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard, in the Rhône Valley. The company's extensive wine portfolio is dedicated in the main to the northern Rhône's four prolific grape varieties: Syrah for the red wines and Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne for the white wines. The vineyards extend over a total of 16 hectares (40 acres), 11 of which are located in the commune of Seyssuel, close to the town of Vienne. Winemaking was common practice in this region as far back as the times of the Roman Empire when the grape Vitis Allobrogica was cultivated and produced in three crus: Sotanum, Taburnum and Heluicum. However, Seyssuel's vineyards were decimated by the 19th Century phylloxera epidemic and remained largely untouched prior to the arrival of Yves, Pierre and François in the 1990s. Sarl Les Vins de Vienne makes approximately 460,000 bottles of wine per year. This portfolio of wines is divided into four labels: Les Vins de Propriété, Les Archevèques, L’Amphore D’Or and L’Amphore D’Argent. The IGP Collines Rhodaniennes wines in the Les Vins de Propriété portfolio are sourced exclusively from vineyard parcels planted in Seyssuel and comprise Taburnum, made from 100 percent Viognier, as well as Sotanum and Heluicum, produced from 100 percent Syrah. The Les Archevèques, or "The Archbishops", range takes its name from the ruins of a castle built by the bishops of Vienne in the Middle Ages. The wines are created from single parcels of vines situated in appellations spanning from Condrieu, to Saint-Péray, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Côte Rôtie. The L'Amphore D'Or and D'Argent wines are made in partnership with winegrowers in regions including the likes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vacqueyras and Gigondas. The distinction between these two brands is their styles – L'Amphore D'Or wines are typically structured, while those in the L'Amphore D'Argent range are fruitier.
