Producer Information
The winery is best known for its authentic red wines made from the traditional local varieties Blaufränkisch, Sankt Laurent and Zweigelt. Josef Umathum also produces fascinating white wines, such as Pinot gris, Yellow & Red Traminer and a very extraordinary Rosé Saignée that has written wine history. The revival of the historic Lindenblättriger grape variety in Burgenland also goes back to Umathum. The original red wine cuvée “Haideboden” was made in this house in 1991. The best single-vineyard wines come from the Kirschgarten, Vom Stein and the Ried Hallebühl. Only hand-picked grapes are processed and the wine is aged in traditional wooden barrels. Living soil and alert plants form the basis for the quality of the wines full of character. All works follow the rhythms of nature. In order to preserve the memory of the plants, the vines are only selected from the oldest vineyards. The winery works in manageable structures, according to organic guidelines that are based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner. The goal is to bring ripe and healthy grapes to the cellar intact, which is why we only use hand-picked grapes. The cellar work is gentle and the aging takes place primarily in wooden barrels. The high-quality single-vineyard wines are only sold after more than three years of storage at the winery. Start-up support is also offered with unusual support campaigns for young talents in the agricultural sector. All those supported so far, such as the vegetable producer Erich Stekovics or the winemaker Uwe Schiefer, were still unknown at the time and are now established figures in their field.
