      Detailed Description

This particular bottling hails from the 1974 vintage, and it boasts a mature character, with a light fruit expression and resolved tannins.

      Producer Information

Antonio Vallana e Figlio is a wine producer based in northern Piedmont. The estate is owned by the Vallana family who have been making wine in the region since 1787. Antonio Vallana is particularly known for its Nebbiolo-based wines made under the Gattinara and wider Piedmont appellations, but it also produces other native grape varieties like Barbera, Vespolina and Uva Rara. The vineyards are planted in iron-rich soils that, along with the area's diurnal temperature variation, provide ideal grape-growing conditions. Grapes are hand-picked and vinified in cement tanks, and the wines age for approximately two years in oak barrels. Antonio Vallana makes four Nebbiolo-predominant wines: Campi Raudii, Spanna, Boca and Gattinara. Campi Raudii translates as "red fields" in Italian, and refers to an historic battle that took place in 101 BC, while Spanna is so-called as it is the local name given to the Nebbiolo grape variety. Boca is made from a blend of Nebbiolo, Vespolina and Uva Rara grapes grown in the village of Boca, whereas Gattinara is a varietal Nebbiolo wine produced in the town of the same name. The estate was officially established in 1937 by Antonio Vallana and his son Bernardo. Today, Antonio Vallana e Figlio is managed by Giuseppina Vallana and her three children, Francis, Marina and Miriam.
