      Detailed Description

Very good deep ruby-red colour, lasts well to the rim. Cedar & coffee aromas dominate the nose. Sweet, ripe, jammy blackcurrant fruit defines the palate from the outset. There are refined, silky tannins, & vivid cassis & blackcurrant-leaf notes. There is a lovely balance between generous fruit, leafy freshness & subtle oak. The finish has a wonderful, supple, silky tannic structure & lasts very well.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Opus One's 1991 is a gorgeously rich, opaque ruby/purple-colored wine with a knock-out nose of smoke, cassis, vanilla, and a whiff of herbs and licorice. Full-bodied, with surprisingly supple, concentrated, chocolatey, cassis, and blackcurrant flavors that ooze across the palate, this voluptuously-textured example of Opus One is atypical in a vintage that produced so many backward wines. There is no question the wine possesses plenty of tannin, but it is admirably concealed by the copious quantities of concentrated fruit.
      • Decanter: The first year in their own winery, with a winemaking team that still had input from both Bordeaux and Napa, with Patrick Léon and Tim Mondavi. The richness is immediately apparent, and straight away this feels like they were marking the beginning of a new era. There is a powerful core of black fruits, and this is a great wine that is still full of life. 33 days skin contact. This was a cool and slow growing season, with a large crop and late harvest. It was the first express-built gravity flow winery in Napa, and at €27 million controversially expensive at the time.

Opus One is one of the world's most famous wines, and among the most expensive produced in the Napa Valley.. Although it is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Opus One makes use of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec in smaller percentages. The wine was initially established as a partnership between two of the biggest names in Bordeaux and Napa Valley: Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Opus One was the first premium California wine sold in Europe, and is one of the original "Cult Cabernets", along with the likes of Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle. The collaboration was conceived in the 1970s and then first realised in 1979, when the first vintage of Opus One was created. It was released to the public in 1984, but had already attracted considerable attention, as a single case of the wine had sold for $24,000 at the first Napa Valley Wine Auction in 1981.Opus One's brand continued to grow considerably through the 1990s, particularly in markets outside of the United States, and in 2004, when Robert Mondavi Winery was acquired by Constellation Brands, Opus One also became part-owned by the multi-national company.
