Producer Information
Château La Serre (sometimes also written as Château la Serre) is a seven-hectare (17-acre) Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé wine estate situated a short distance east of Saint-Émilion town in northeastern Bordeaux, on the so-called Right Bank of the Dordogne river. The château is known for its Merlot-dominant grand vin, and also produces a second label: Les Menuts de la Serre. The estate takes its name from its 17th Century owner Romain de Labaym, Sieur de La Serre, who was responsible for the construction of the château. In 1956, it was purchased by Bernard d'Arfeuille and in the 1970s his son Luc d'Arfeuille carried out extensive renovations. The estate has been run by his nephew, Arnaud d'Arfeuille, since 2013. It was named a Grand Cru Classé in the original Saint-Émilion classification of 1955 – a title it has retained through every subsequent iteration of the ranking. Merlot is the most prolific grape variety in the vineyard, occupying 80 percent of the total hectarage. Cabernet Franc makes up the remainder. The vines are on average 35 years old and are planted on south-facing limestone slopes. The vines are handpicked and the château uses laser optical sorting in the winery. After a cold pre-fermentation and subsequent alcoholic fermentation in concrete cuves, Château La Serre ages its wine for 15 to 18 months in oak barrels, roughly half of which are new oak.
